had come across A Love Letter For You sometime last year, but was reminded of it again when I wrote about UP THERE, a documentary about hand-painted advertising. Love Letter is a public art project by Stephen Powers and the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, and consists of love letters painted on walls facing the Market elevated train. Some of my favorite murals are posted above, but all are equally lovely.
The project will encompass 50 painted walls between 63rd and 45th street on Market Street, a documentary film with scripted elements, a sign school and shop that will provide training for area youth and free signage for businesses on the market street corridor, and 2 books documenting the project. One of the books will be a small paperback that will be distributed to area businesses free of charge, for them to sell to visitors. The other book will be a larger hardcover book that will document not only the artwork, but the neighborhood and the inspirations of the Love Letter Project.
The Mural Arts Program is a wonderful collaborative community that makes art to transform public spaces and individual lives. Love Letter is one of many collaborative projects by Mural Arts, and you can check out other events and exhibitions on their site.
