Being that there is a myriad of subject matter available to artists and designers, I’m always turned off by any use of pornography or celebrity in art. Pop culture in general contains a built-in draw, and by using celebrity or porn, the artist often gives away any mystery of his intent, as it’s clear to me they want attention rather than share something truly intimate.

That’s why I was surprised to immediately like the work of painter/collage artist Jonathan Yeo. His entirely out of context use of pornographic material is refreshing, quite lovely at times, and obviously hilarious. His recent Los Angeles show Porn in the USA featured portraits of Tiger Woods, Paris Hilton, Sarah Palin and George Bush — entirely created from porn. The portraits aside, it’s his leaf studies series that excites me the most. Leaves obviously have a fleshy look about them, and pornography certainly contains every variety from smooth to disgusting; it’s a perfect match. He’s also made a series of wallpaper patterns which are to die for.

Already an accomplished painter, Yeo is most definitely not an exploiter looking for attention. I found this video over at Babelgum and he seems quite nice and mild mannered. My favorite part is when he’s describing that moment all artists and designers can relate to; that moment when you find the perfect element to complete your piece. Only in his case it was “an extremely large black cock.”
