Silent Running

April 1st, 2009 by colorcubic

I remember seeing this movie when I was a freshman in high school. If I remember correctly, I had to hit up Portland’s very own Movie Madness to find this. For some reason I thought it would be a lot like Logan’s Run, but unfortunately it wasn’t. Not to imply that it was bad or anything, but I would be lying if I said it was amazing… Original compositions by  Joan Baez didn’t help either. Read the rest of this entry »

Lick the short

March 31st, 2009 by colorcubic

We’d like to give a huge shout out to our friend and colleague, Johnny Le, for the completion of his short film, Lick. Unfortunately we can’t preview the short, but as you can see above, we have completed a short run of promotional prints to promote the film.

In the meantime, you can check out » www.licktheshort.com to preview some of the deleted scenes from the film, as well as the film synopsis.

Enjoy :)

Electrobotany

March 19th, 2009 by colorcubic

This is a quick update to let everyone know we’re still here, just really busy with projects… If you happen to follow any of our work on the behance network, you’ve probably already seen this piece. That being said, we thought we would give a little more insight into what inspired us to create this. Our love for electronic music, horticulture, and old, nostalgic experiences tends to drive our creative direction in most of our work, and this piece was certainly no exception, giving way for the title: Electrobotany.

We used the displace filter, along with some custom actions & textures we’ve created using layers of photoshop filters to create the background, and added accents to the headphones. It was kind of a lengthy process, but we finally reached a point where we were happy.

Anyway, we hope you enjoy this piece. :)

The Nothings Of The North

February 9th, 2009 by colorcubic

If you haven’t  yet guessed, we (Colorcubic) are very into the eclectic electronic music scene. Whether it’s IDM, click (clique) house, ambient, dubstep, or as our sister company, Nueva Forma, likes to refer to it as: acousmatic pop, we’re all over it. That being said, Ametsub’s new album just dropped, titled: The Nothings Of The North. If you haven’t heard any of the works by Ametsub, I would highly recommend you buying one of his records. Now initially that would have been very difficult to do, unless you live in Japan (Nihhon), but recently I’ve discovered his label is putting out releases all over i-tunes.

Originally I was apprehensive to buy this new release of Ametsub. Not on account of the album being bad, (on the contrary) but because this album seems to only be available in the states through i-tunes, and I was afraid of i-tunes mucking up my efforts with their “DRM” nonsense. But then, Christy was kind enough to remind me that i-tunes is no longer scamming people with their “DRM” bologna. Anyway, if you get the chance, and you enjoy what you’re hearing, buy The Nothings Of The North. You won’t regret it.

Enjoy ¥ :)

Tread Water

February 7th, 2009 by colorcubic

You may recall a post we published a while back, touching on the brand process for our client, Tread Water; a start up company, specializing in creative business solutions, by offering consultation to small & medium sized businesses. Michael Walcott is the principal of Tread Water, and was kind enough to send us the finished business card that we designed for him. So in turn we thought we’d share the results. :)

We’d love to know your thoughts, if you have any.

Intellivision is like a fine Whiskey

February 2nd, 2009 by colorcubic

Growing up in the 80s, there were always fun things to do around my house. Playing around on the Intellivision gaming console was one of them. Playing games such as Donkey Kong, He-Man, Battle Ship, Burger Time, and Lock & Chase were  just a few of my favorites, although what really hooked me was the game art and design. It was always so perfect, and due to the low graphics quality (which at the time was pretty advanced), you really had to use your imagination when playing, so the game art and design helped out a lot in that regard. Later on, I remember being given a Nintendo, and as a result, I pretty much buried the Intellivision in a closet, never to be see again.

Rockwell vs. Mysto and Pizzi

January 13th, 2009 by colorcubic

Hey everyone, just wanted to say real quick, thanks for all your support in 2008, and for everyone who used the 2009 poster to help celebrate the new year. :D We’re very thankful for all the hype we’ve been getting, but we certainly won’t let it go to our heads… ;) Anyway, we’ve just been working away, here in the office; we really haven’t had a break since New Years Eve, and even then, Christy and I were both stressing about finishing our projects in the new year. With the Colorbureau just around the corner, (our own proprietary online shop), and wrapping current client projects, we really haven’t had enough time to post anything new on here.

Anyway, I thought it would be appropriate to publish some music we’ve been listening to recently, to help us through the work week. I’m sure  you’ll recognize these two gems. Rockwell’s “Somebody’s Watching Me” featuring: Michael Jackson VS. Mysto & Pizzi remix of “Somebody’s Watching Me.” If you watch television, or you’re online every second of the day, (like us), you’ll recognize these mixes from the dope GEICO commercials that have been popping up all over the place.

I have to say, on a personal level, I’m a fan of what Mysto & Pizzi are doing, although, sometimes, their beats can start sounding pretty derivitive. The flip side of this critique is Rockwell; especially his hit single “Somebody’s Watching Me.” A flash in the pan? Not if you grew up in the 80s, and especially not if you’re a dj (i’m talking about turntables & vinyl), and when up against the Mysto & Pizzi remix, I do prefer the original. I’m sorry, but nothing beats classic Michael Jackson, singing “I always feel like somebody’s watching meeeeeee.” Anyway, you can decide for yourself which you like more.

Well, it’s now 11:15 pm Monday, and we’re both just about to head out, run home, shower, grab some food, and then come back to work (No, we’re not joking; we’re actually coming back to work tonight).

So, enjoy these tracks, let us know which is your favorite, and we’ll try and publish some of our recent work, later this week.

Enjoy ;)

Sky Guide Service logo

December 20th, 2008 by colorcubic

Well, things really seem to be moving a long quite nicely. We just submitted two logo concepts to a new client of ours, DBA: Sky’s Guide Service. Sky’s Guide Service is a premier fishing experience in the Pacific Northwest, and they decided to approach us for a brand redesign to enhance their brand equity. I’m not going to lie, this was actually a pretty challenging project to take on initially, as the fishing industry is pretty cutthroat, but the Sky’s Guide team are a great group of people, and they certainly eliminated any negative preconceived notions of what a fishing experience might entail.

After a significant amount of research, we decided it was more appropriate to feature the primary tool used for fishing, and not the conventional fish icon. For the type, we decided to run with Glypha, a really nice slab serif that seemed to fit perfectly with this piece.

Also, if you follow our brand work, you’ll notice that we really strive to steer away from clutter. Our first objective to any brand project is to minimize the clutter, and then add clever / iconic imagery, if applicable.

This piece certainly proved to be one of those cases, and, as it turns out, Sky’s Guide Service has approved this concept, and we’re now moving onto incorporating the new brand identity into all of their collateral pieces.

We’ll be sure to post any accompanying pieces associated with this project in the coming weeks.

Hope you enjoy! :D

Burial

December 11th, 2008 by colorcubic

I’m kind of late in posting about this, as I’m sure some of you are already well aware of the underground dubstep craze known as: “Burial”, especially since this record came out in 2006.

Well, I’m certainly on the band wagon when it comes to supporting Burial; as he is one of the best artists / producers I’ve heard in a really long time. I’ve been listening to this record for some months now, and I don’t think I’ve been so into a record for at least… 10+ years. As soon as I’m done here, I’m heading out to look for the LP of his January 2008 release, “Untrue”, which is supposed to be a phenomenal follow up to his self-titled debut.

Anyway, I could spend the next 10 - 20 minutes trying to come up with some really in depth statement about how this record is just amazing, but instead I’m just going to end it here, and let one of my favorite tracks from this record, titled: “Distant Lights” do the talking.

I really hope you enjoy this as much as I do.

Oh, and if you’re interested in where to buy this record, you should head on over to boomkat. They’ve got a great selection of records to peruse.

Enjoy. ;)

The iLog and Log1k

December 10th, 2008 by colorcubic

Stumbled upon some pretty wicked pieces of hardware by: Owl Project, appropriately titled “i-log” & “Log1k.” Apparently these woodblock infused hardware devices act as noise generators, senquencers, and samplers for electronic music, or just music production in general. I’m still rather stumped (no pun intended ;) ) by the mere fact that someone would think to create these with the intentional use for music / noise production, but I’m also really into industrial design & electronic music, so this is exactly my cup-o-tea.

Apparently you can sync some of these i-logs with your Mac and / or pc music production software, and / or sync it directly to the Log1k sequencer / sampler, and just create sounds, beats, melodies, etc…

To me this comes off as the official means of literally creating organically infused electronic music. Other i-logs have the ability to record actual light by utilizing stereo ambient light sensors that detect amplitude modulation in ambient light. All in all, this is literally an amazing piece of hardware, and I’m seriously contemplating getting one, two, or all.

To find out more about i-log, visit Owl Project.

Hope you enjoy! :D

Oh, and if anyone has one, please, let me know your thoughts.

Gracefully Refined

December 10th, 2008 by colorcubic

This is an 11.5 X 17.5 promotional print we finished a few weeks back for our client, Flowerbud. The “G” at the top we made from scratch, and the accompanying type is a modified Caslon pro. The bouquet of flowers featured are Calla Lilies, shot with a Canon 40D, using a 28-135mm zoom lens. The texture was made primarily in photoshop, with a few illustrator elements. If you’re interested to purchase, you can check their site to find when they plan to make this print available.

Peace, :P ¥
